about
The first release with new drummer Paul Hanley (yes, his dad was in The Fall), 'Poverty Tourist' was recorded entirely remotely during the early stages of the Covid-19 lockdown. For the Manchester-based four-piece, it was an unusual way of doing things: used to recording live in a studio together, the track was instead recorded separately in a matter of days, spurred on by the frustrations of lockdown-induced boredom and idleness. As a result, the theme of isolation lingers, managing to work its way into the feel of the song.
'Poverty Tourist' retains Threads rough and ready lo-fi sound - thanks to guitarist George Robbins's home-made pedals and tape-saturated vocals - but it is also a deviation from their past releases as they step into darker post-punk territory.Bassist/vocalist Kane Martin's added injection of groove and leisurely spoken-word monologues bring to mind Dry Cleaning, Deliluh and The Fall at times.
Originally a poem written by the band's bassist Kane Martin - which is being used for a short film by MMU film students - 'Poverty Tourist' explores both the banal and surreal - from the evilness of the current climate, to jobs, ASOS packages and technology. With their slow invasion of everything in life, what else is there to do other than laugh?
‘Poverty Tourist’ is available on all major streaming services from 26th June 2020.
