Formed in 2017 in Leeds, The Vat-Egg Imposition follows in the Northern traditions of Frank Sidebottom, The Fall, and John Shuttleworth, only with a greater emphasis on processed food.
Vat-Egg was a villainous egg from Eggtown, Northern England, who fell (or was he pushed?) into a vat of mutagenic chemicals, and bonded with said vat, emerging as the part-vat, part-egg creature who fronts this band.
Leaping from the pages of the comic book Eggtown and into disturbingly three-dimensional real life, he is joined by actual humans Ste Grindrod (bass), Neil Gumbley (guitar), Ged McGurn (drums/backing vocals) and Arriel Grimes (keys/backing vocals), who all play their instruments competently and with enthusiasm.
Musically indebted to The Fall, Julian Cope and various others of their post-punk ilk, but with a noticeable injection of groove, the lyrical/performance side of the band is more in the surrealistic, comedic vein of Frank Sidebottom, John Shuttleworth, Flight Of The Conchords and John Otway. Song titles include I Leave My Comics In Waterstones, Cannibals Of Aberystwyth, and Last Rubicon Mango From Paris.
Although a singing egg cartoon character leading an indie band is a bit of a curious concept on paper, the band really needs to be seen to be believed, because, basically, no-one gets it until they see them playing, and then they totally get it. Also the fact that Vat-Egg throws out free packets of crisps before the song I Bought You Crisps probably helps to win them over. People like crisps.
A comic book detailing Vat-Egg’s attempts to escape from prison, Vat-Egg Busts Loose, is available to buy at gigs, which gives some added background to the character. This comic is also available at the Leeds City Centre branch of Waterstones, because Vat-Egg just leaves it there.
The band have played numerous gigs in Leeds (and 2 in other places!) in 2018/19, including supports for The Rebel and Jeffrey Lewis, who both said they were good. An album is in the midst of being recorded, with increasing activity planned for 2020.
