Liked Oort Clod A LOT. Priceless Bodies, however, are the winner for me. Very interesting and slightly unusual twin sister ex-pat Canadian outfit with genuine synergy and fresh ideas. Over their six tracks they utterly delighted us!
Initially formed as a loose collection of musicians working with former Unpaid Intern guitarist and singer Patrick Clod, Manchester-based Oort Clod are now a fully-formed five-piece also consisting of former Hipshakes drummer Bruce Sargent, his younger brother Matt Kings, Matt Fortunati - the Italian Bobby Digital and producer of this EP - and The Early Mornings drummer Rhys Davies.
According to some bloke on the Internet who uploaded their single and live album (and will be served a cease and desist imminently) Oort Clod sound more like proponents of Australia’s contemporary indie music scene rather than anything distinctly Mancunian. The band cynically took that all the way to the bank by getting Mikey Young from Eddie Current Suppression Ring to master their EP. Informed by the likes of Pavement, Flying Nun-era The Clean, The Fall, Dick Diver and Scott and Charlene’s Wedding, Oort Clod's blend of indie pop/rock, post-punk and kiwi-pop is both timely and timeless.
B-Side – Priceless Bodies
Priceless Bodies are a Manchester-based lo-fi project consisting of twin sisters Viv & Bianca Pencz. The duo have created their own musical vision with a multidisciplinary approach, producing their own songs, videos and artwork. Their new EP, mastered by Oort Clod’s Matt Fortunati, is an eclectic exploration of working-class & female-forward living, with references to mental health, Soviet heritage, and American New Wave cinema all coalesced into a sound uniquely theirs: guitar, analogue synth, sampling, and idiosyncratic percussion - from sleigh bells to kitchen knives – are all incorporated.
Named after a sarcastic line by Rimbaud, whose subversive energy informed the band as disillusioned teens in Vancouver, Canada (a place known by locals as No Fun City), they’ve had elements of their work compared to Datblygu, The Cure, and Laurie Anderson. To fully appreciate their diverse set of influences, tune into their Reform Radio show, where they play everything from new wave and no wave to post-disco from the ’70s and ’80s.
The Oort Clod / Priceless Bodies Split EP is out digitally across all streaming services and on limited edition pink and green cassette from 24th September.
